Wieners on Wynkoop: dachshund races and Bavarian fun

Denver Union Station is going to the dogs this October, and we mean that in the most adorable way possible.

The historic Denver landmark will host its inaugural Wieners on Wynkoop on Saturday, Oct. 3, bringing dachshund races, costumes, Bavarian food, live music and plenty of four-legged personality to the Terminal Bar Patio.

The free event runs from noon to 4 p.m. and is presented by Denver Union Station, the German Cultural Foundation and Mile High Dachshunds Rescue.

Dachshund races, costumes and Bavarian bites

The festivities kick into particularly tiny-legged high gear at 1 p.m., when Mile High Dachshunds Rescue hosts dachshund races. At 2:30 p.m., pups can strut their stuff during a dachshund costume contest.

The afternoon also includes live entertainment from Steve Rock Tanzkapelle and DJ Chris, educational displays celebrating German Unity Day and a caricature artist.

Humans haven’t been forgotten. Terminal Bar Beer Garden will serve German-inspired food and drink specials, including beer bratwurst topped with sauerkraut, Bavarian pretzels and other baked goods from Kaiser Bakery.

Why it’s worth your time: Come for the absurdly cute dachshund races, stay for the Bavarian bites and beer. The free event also offers an easy way to experience Denver Union Station beyond catching a train.

Dachshunds stay free at The Crawford Hotel in October

For dachshunds whose racing careers require overnight accommodations, The Crawford Hotel is getting in on the celebration.

Throughout October, the hotel is waiving pet fees for dachshunds as part of its Wieners Stay Free offer. Four-legged guests receive a dog bed, food and water bowls and a treat during their stay.

Their humans get a perk, too: a $50 Denver Union Station dining voucher that can be used at participating Union Station restaurants and bars during October.

Located inside Denver Union Station, The Crawford is a MICHELIN Guide One Key hotel with 112 guest rooms. The hotel’s rooms were recently remodeled as part of a larger refresh of Union Station that also included updates to the Great Hall and The Cooper Lounge.

Who it’s for: Dachshund devotees, dog-friendly travelers, families looking for a free fall outing and anyone who considers watching tiny dogs sprinting down a racetrack a perfectly reasonable way to spend a Saturday.
