Harrah’s Resort Southern California surprised me. Before visiting, many people told me the casino resort is one of their favorites. As someone who doesn’t gamble, this piqued my interest. This resort is much more than meets the eye. Lazy river fun, peaceful outdoor spaces, spa relaxation and plentiful dining options level up Harrah’s Resort Southern California in ways I didn’t expect.

Why guests return to Harrah’s Resort Southern California

Remember when I mentioned I heard that Harrah’s Southern California was a fan favorite? One friend shared that the property is a yearly family birthday destination for her grandfather (who recently celebrated his 95th birthday).

My friend isn’t the only one to sing the praises of this Funner, Calif hotel and casino. While in line for hotel check-in, several guests shared with me they were returning visitors. Now, I know why this is a place people come back to again and again.

What the resort atmosphere is really like

Yes, Harrah’s Southern California is a place for gambling, but beyond the casino floor, it offers a resort feel that’s both welcoming to those seeking relaxation and/or family fun activities. 

The hotel has shops where visitors can purchase essentials, souvenirs and vacation wear. Restaurants are dotted throughout the casino and outdoor seating areas are surprisingly serene. Lazy river access is complimentary for all checked-in hotel guests, and there are two adults-only pools on property.

Editor’s note: The lobby entrance and gambling areas are smoky, which is expected for a casino but may be a bit jolting for nonsmokers. Just know that nonsmoking rooms are available and smoking is not permitted in the lazy river area.

Where to eat at Harrah’s Resort Southern California

Having a variety of dining places (and pricing) within the casino is another perk for families, including:

• Hell’s Kitchen: A sit-down, higher-end restaurant founded by the infamous Gordon Ramsay. Choose from a mix of surf and turf options and menu highlights like Beef Wellington, Spiced Lamb Rack and tofu fried rice.
• The Café: A moderately priced sit-down dining option that serves breakfast all day, sandwiches, pastas, desserts, beverages and specialty items such as Pot Roast and Chimichurri Salad.
• Tierra y Mar: This much-anticipated dining experience is now open, featuring favorites from the mountains around Mexico City to Baja’s Sea of Cortez.
• Starbucks: One of my favorite onsite offerings! You can even mobile order at this location.
• More grab-and-go options: Funner Ramen (we highly recommend it. The ramen is spectacular and the mango smoothie shake is a must-order); KJ Chinese Restaurant; Corner Counter; Smashburger; Earl of Sandwich; ‘ritas Taco Truck.

There are also several bars and locations throughout the casino for alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. A limited room service menu is available. 

Should you book the spa?

The spa is conveniently located off the lobby. If time permits, treat yourself 100%. They have everything from massages and facials to a full-service salon. I had a 50-minute “Best Massage Ever” treatment, and it hit the mark. Guests receive all-day spa access with the purchase of a treatment.

Harrah’s Southern California lazy river and pool tips

Harrah’s has made an oasis of its outdoor space for families and guests who enjoy a full day by the pool. We recommend reserving a cabana. This way, you have a dedicated space to lounge and take a reprieve from the sun. 

Here are other Harrah’s pool and lazy river things to know:

• Families are welcome in the lazy river, which is open to guests of all ages.
• There is a shop where you can buy your own inflatable tubes, but expect to pay a pretty penny. We suggest bringing your own.
• There are only two pools with adults-only access (guests must be 21 or over).
• If you rent a cabana, make sure to do so in advance to reserve your spot. Water, sodas and one basket of chips and salsa are included in the rental fee.
• Food and beverages are available throughout the lazy river area for an additional charge.

Things to do near Harrah’s Southern California

Wineries, cute produce markets, shops and orchards are nearby the resort. We ventured to Pacific Beach during our stay, which ended up being about a 40-minute drive.

Harrah’s Resort Southern California’s reasonable pricing, activities and location make it a worthy destination, even for those who don’t gamble or want to spend their time at the casino. I can confidently report that I am one more person who will return and share stories about why we enjoy the resort.
