Meet Paige Dungan
It’s clear from the jump that Paige Dungan, CEO of Little Blue Pigeon, knows books. As a former book publicist for more than two decades, she has an impressive breadth of knowledge of what readers are looking for. She admits it takes her six to eight hours each Monday to order inventory so she can fully understand every book that fills the shelves of Little Blue Pigeon.
When asked for recommendations for a mystery novel and memoir during our visit, Dungan immediately grabbed a couple of books off the shelves and provided a synopsis of each, with no hesitation.
“Most bookstore owners don’t have time to read every story, but they should know exactly what they’re bringing in,” she says.
The story behind Little Blue Pigeon
In addition to Dungan’s adoration and genre expertise of books, she is dedicated to encouraging reading proficiency and fostering community.
“I love advocating for storytelling voices,” she says. “I have a huge passion for literacy across all ages. Neighborhood bookstores used to be a place where you would not only come to share stories, but also to exchange knowledge.”
Why the bookstore’s Larimer Square location matters
Little Blue Pigeon’s location in downtown Larimer Square is ideal for visits and gatherings and has a story of its own. The building, hailing back to the 1800s, has served as a dance hall, Masons’ headquarters and a saddlery.
In addition to its high ceilings and historic finishings, elegant modern touches add charm to the space. The French wallpaper-inspired artwork, hand-painted by local Denver Lupine Design artists, features depictions of literary favorites like Winnie the Pooh, James and the Giant Peach, and, of course, little blue pigeons.

Why Little Blue Pigeon belongs on every Denver book lover’s itinerary
Little Blue Pigeon hosts author readings and writing workshops, as well as artisan nights, where Dungan brings in different makers to share and teach their craft to community members.
“Community is the heart of what the store is,” Dungan says. And it shows. She shares that she often works with book clubs, knowing they are part of what “fuels the heartbeat of the community.”
Dungan has also found that local book clubs provide valuable insight into literary areas for which she may not be as familiar.
A treasured space for the younger crowd
Every Saturday, Little Blue Pigeon has story time. During the week, children flock to a small picnic bench in the corner of the store where they can read and color.
Littles have their pick of classics and new stories to read whenever they like.
Another adorable addition for kids to enjoy is a “pigeon hunt.” Throughout the store, tiny pigeon figurines are thoughtfully hidden. As an adult, I enjoyed searching for them, so I can only imagine how fun it is for actual kids.
