Field Trip Friday spotlight: The Gables Wine Country Inn

Spending my formative years in Sonoma County, how could I have missed the treasure that is The Gables Wine Country Inn? Nestled within the wine country, this charming bed and breakfast (B&B) is a nostalgic nod to the bygone Gothic Victorian era (1877!). From the ‘Pride and Prejudice’-style decor and absence of large-screen TVs to indulgent breakfasts crafted with TLC, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

The Gables Wine Country Inn musts:

  • Grab a book and head to the parlor (where you’ll likely hear the soft, rich sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong).
  • Take a walk around the property and soak in the gorgeous vineyards and sprawling countryside.
  • Save room for breakfast — you won’t want to miss a morsel.

Conveniently located near wine country destinations

A mere 20-minute (tops) drive from Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport, close to Downtown Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Windsor, Russian River and Sonoma, The Gables Wine Country Inn’s location is ideal for visiting wineries, enjoying a quiet reprieve or sightseeing some of Northern California’s most picturesque places.

A step back in time

For as much as guests of The Gables Wine Country Inn will fall in love with the two-story historical accommodation, they will likely have equal affection for Pam and Larry Willis. This lovely couple took ownership of the B&B around 13 years ago after a move from the Midwest.

It’s undeniably clear that Pam and Larry have invested a great deal to modernize the inn while staying true to its historical roots. Each room is impeccably decorated — from the guestrooms to the parlor and dining room.

We stayed in the “Sunset” room, decorated in soft cream, green and pink, with a four-poster bed in the main room and a small day bed in the other (a prime set-up for families and friends). The other bedrooms (we sneaked a peak), were equally winsome — all with soft colors and perfectly matched embellishments. Plus, our bed was super comfortable!

Each bedroom also has a private bathroom and clawfoot tub!

Larry’s day two breakfast featuring a crisp tortilla with shredded chicken, avocado and fried egg, adorned with an edible flower.

The breakfast

I have to be careful writing about breakfast for fear of crying because I can’t eat Pam’s and Larry’s masterpieces daily. But, the memory of their creations won’t disappear any time soon!

  • Breakfast day one: Pam’s homemade blueberry muffins, poached pear with ice cream, Larry’s egg soufflé with a cheesy surprise inside and a spicy, a locally made spicy sausage with a side of toast.
  • Breakfast day two: Pam’s homemade bread, poached nectarine topped with blueberries and a crisp tortilla with shredded chicken, avocado and fried egg, adorned with an edible flower.
  • Breakfast day three: Pam’s homemade muffins, poached apricot with a scrumptious crumble topping and an expertly poached egg with a side of toast and bacon.

Food allergies are accommodated too. I received gluten-free (equally delicious) substitutes when needed.

Let’s talk about Larry for a minute. Larry may not have a culinary background (I asked), but he clearly has raw natural cooking talent — in spades. I’ve never had such perfectly cooked eggs.

During your meal, expect Pam to always be ready to refill your coffee, orange juice or a myriad of other available beverages. Oh, and she will ring a sizable gong precisely at 9 a.m. to alert all guests breakfast is ready.

Pam and Larry knowledge

Looking for the best wine tours? Pam and Larry have you covered. While this wasn’t part of our trip, we saw how this couple guided other guests to the best locales, tastings and tours throughout the wine country.

Want to know where to go for dinner? Pam and Larry know exactly where to send you.

We loved every second of our conversation with these proprietors — from cool anecdotes about past patrons (ask them about the cardiologist/piano player when you visit) to the part-time owl “Owlivia” barn resident.

The inn’s outside paradise

During our stay, it rained nearly the entire time, but on dry days visitors can peruse the garden, catch a glimpse of the vineyard and barn and check out some of the other historic onsite buildings (including the original outhouse!). Rain or sun, this property is simply stunning.
