Victorian building’s deep-rooted history

Over $160 million has been invested to revitalize the Victorian building, and the opening of its guest rooms will mark an important milestone in Blackstone’s more than $550 million restoration plan. Prior to the reopening of the guest rooms, Hotel del Coronado will reveal its newly renovated Crown and Coronet Rooms, which have been thoughtfully restored and made available for meetings, events and groups bookings starting in July 2024. The completion of the Victorian building guest rooms will mark the crowning moment of the multi-year, multi-phase renovation that has preserved and enhanced this National Historic Landmark.

“It has been an honor to be a part of this journey of reinvention of an iconic landmark and one-of-a-kind resort,” says Sanjiv Hulugalle, managing director at Hotel del Coronado. “The Victorian building is the most widely recognized part of this historic property, and our significant preservation efforts will elevate the guest experience to new heights with the reopening of the Victorian neighborhood.”

Adds Rob Harper, head of real estate asset management Americas at Blackstone, “The Del has been an iconic and timeless destination for over 135 years, and Blackstone’s more than $550 million restoration process has been rooted in a deep respect for its legacy. We are proud of our investment and the thoughtful work that has been done to revitalize the Victorian building for the next generation of guests, and we look forward to its completion.”

Celebrating a legacy

Led by Wimberly Interiors in partnership with WATG’s California architecture studio, the restoration of the Victorian building aims to celebrate the legacy of the property and ensure the revitalized guest rooms incorporate modern amenities, comforts and luxuries. Guest rooms boast restored original finishes, design enhancements to bathrooms, furnishing and artwork and state-of-the-art technologies.

David Marshall of Heritage Architecture & Planning has led The Victorian guestroom redesign effort with the same vigor and attention to detail that awarded the firm a “Preservation Project of The Year” honor from the Save Our Heritage Organization, as well as a “Preservation Design Award” from the California Preservation Foundation following their extensive and diligent reconstruction of the hotel’s front porch and historic Victorian lobby.

Completed revitalization efforts

Hotel del Coronado embarked on a renovation and development plan in 2018 to ensure the resort remains a sought-after destination. Completed elements of the overall revitalization include:

  • The Laundry Pub — Completed in summer 2024, The Laundry Pub is located inside The Del’s beautifully restored laundry building, featuring an 1880s-era bar, original brickwork, vaulted ceilings and the laundry’s early conveyor system above restored wood floors.
  • Beach Village at The Del — An enclave of cottages and villas and one of the resort’s two residential-style neighborhoods, which unveiled a full makeover in late 2023.
  • Shore House at The Del — The newest neighborhood inclusive of 75 residential-style accommodations on the south end of the resort, which debuted in 2022.

  • Serẽa Coastal Cuisine — The sustainable sea-to-table restaurant concept debuted in 2019, with James Beard Foundation’s Smart Catch Leader Executive Chef JoJo at the helm.
  • The Cabanas & The Views – Renovations of guestrooms in the Cabanas and Views neighborhoods, which revitalized 97 and 217 rooms respectively.
