In 1986, Arizona made national news with the debut of an awe-inspiring 25-acre hotel built directly into the Tempe Buttes Mountain range. Not only did the unique locale allow for 180-degree views of Downtown Phoenix and the Superstition Mountains, but the design – showcasing the mountain itself in the lobby, by the pool, and via a floating restaurant of sorts atop the highest point of the site – turned heads and inspired a generation of architectural creativity in Arizona and beyond. The hotel, as one might guess, is the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes.

Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes refreshes indoor and outdoor spaces
Nearly 40 years later, the local icon is turning heads all over again as it recently announced the completion of a sweeping, sensational multi-million-dollar renovation of its guestrooms, suites and fitness center, as well as an impressive expansion of the outdoor spaces.
Owned and managed by Columbia Sussex, the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes offers 353 newly renovated guestrooms and suites, including a presidential suite, chairman suite and seven studio rooms. The guestrooms and suites’ new design pays homage to the resort’s synchronicity with its dessert surroundings. It embraces a subdued palette of warm, natural hues from the Tempe Butte and the beauty and ancient environment reflected in each room’s natural surfaces.
Timeless design, ultimate comfort
The look is warm, effortless and tranquil, utilizing understated tactile materials, weathered, rustic wire brushed oak, twisted basket raffias and modern metals with clean lines, emphasize simplistic textures that have an artisan feel. The design evokes an ageless authenticity and balances subtle antiquity and elevated design for a look with bright, casual sophistication and a timeless modern spirit. The redesigned guestrooms also focus on lounging with new relaxing ambient lighting, electronic connectivity additions and functional workspace areas.
Additionally, each luxurious guest room is designed for optimal rest and productivity with architectural framing, contrasting finishes and thoughtful solutions to enhance a guest’s stay, which include:
- Convenient wall outlets, lamp outlets and nightstands outfitted with USB and USB-C ports for multiple electronic devices
- Luxurious bedding with cotton-rich linens, fluffy pillows and embroidered robes
- High-speed Wi-Fi and a large desk with a well-lit workspace, comfortable chair and plug-in panels
- 55-inch flat-panel TVs with the Marriott Entertainment Package, including premium cable and movie channels to keep guests well-entertained
- In-room coffee bar
Bathrooms include new built in showers with glass doors and contemporary and spacious white quartz countertops featuring large backlit mirror illuminating the room. Also added is new bathroom floor tile, modern barn sliding bathroom doors with frosted glass and hardware, as well as stationary Aveda pump shampoo, conditioner, and body wash shower dispensers.
On The Rocks: An outdoor patio paradise
On The Rocks is the newly expanded patio bar with epic views of Four Peaks and Camelback Mountains. The drink menu is a celebration of local, domestic and imported beers and wines including Four Peaks and Grand Canyon Brewing, as well as an expansive list of bourbons and whiskies, highlighted by such brands as Blanton’s, Widow Jane, Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig and Weller Blue.
The cocktail menu offers elevated takes on classics including a Maker’s Mark-kissed Old Fashioned, Tito’s Vodka Bloody Mary, and of course, margaritas. Those seeking a bite with their sip are also in luck as the new menu also boasts an array of burgers, handhelds, fresh salads, tacos, premium cuts of meat and seafood, plus several shareable dishes including artisan flatbreads, an ample charcuterie board, pan-fried potstickers, ceviche and wings.
The outdoor oasis is in addition to Top of the Rock, which continues to be a feather in the cap of the city, offering unparalleled city views in every direction as well as a locally sourced menu of upscale New American favorites.
Kachina Patio was also expanded and can accommodate up to 250 guests, featuring views of mountains, and is the ideal space for luncheons, cocktail receptions or dinner events.
Self-care amenities — on point
The fitness center was redesigned by Matrix Fitness and now boasts cardiovascular equipment that guests can connect to cellphones, enabling them to watch or stream content. The well-appointed center is now the perfect complement to the resort’s two outdoor pools — one of which is geared toward families — and Narande Spa onsite, which offers massages, facials, body wraps, hand and foot pampering, eye treatments and several salon services.
With these enhancements, the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes is not only back amongst the top destinations in the city, but across the entire Southwest.
